KUU TAMURA

Kuu Tamura - Illustrative Tattoo Artist in Orlando

Drawing Since Before They Could Remember

Kuu Tamura grew up in Yokohama, Japan with a pen in hand and a head full of characters. Illustration was never a phase — it was the one constant thread running through childhood, carrying them through late nights at the drawing table and early mornings that started all over again. Making art wasn't something Kuu did for fun. It was how they understood the world.

The path to tattooing wasn't obvious. After graduating with a communications degree and spending years as an illustrator and cosplayer in Japan's anime and fan art community, Kuu made a decision that required real courage: pack three suitcases, take their life savings of $3,000, and at 22 years old, move alone to a country they'd never lived in to pursue a tattooing apprenticeship. They left behind family, friends, and everything familiar. They'll tell you it was the bravest thing they've ever done — and also the best.

They've been at The East since November 2021, and the community they've found here shows in everything they do.

The Style: Bright, Illustrative, and Deeply Personal

Kuu's work sits at the intersection of things they genuinely love. Animals. Florals. Pokémon. Anime. The kind of subjects that are, as Kuu puts it, colorful and fun — and that come alive under their hand in ways that feel both polished and full of personality. The line quality and character-forward energy of manga and anime runs throughout their work, alongside the natural world's textures and the symbolic richness of Japanese folklore and ukiyo-e.

Key artistic touchstones include illustrator AKIAKANE, mangaka Hiroyuki Asada, and Vincent Van Gogh — alongside musicians Kenshi Yonezu and Florence + the Machine, whose work reflects Kuu's belief that no culture can exist without music, and that art, at its best, is what brings people together.

Kuu also offers Japanese-language consultations (日本語可) — a meaningful option for Japanese-speaking clients who want to communicate their ideas in full.

Fueled by Travel and Live Music

When Kuu isn't tattooing, they're most alive when they're somewhere new. Traveling is one of their primary sources of creative fuel — soaking in unfamiliar cities, photographing nature, absorbing the scenery and culture of places outside their everyday. Live music runs a close second. Both feed directly into the work.

In Orlando, you'll find Kuu at pop-up markets and pop culture events, whether as a guest or a vendor. It's where they connect with other artists, meet new people, and stay plugged into the creative community that's become their found family here.

The Clients They Love Most

Kuu's favorite sessions are the ones where a client is as excited about their work as they are. The people who come in with an idea, hand Kuu the wheel, and trust them to put their own spin on it — because that's exactly what they came for. Those clients, Kuu says, tend to be the most open, and the results show it.

"I really do have the best clients in the world."
