EARL FUNK

A man with tattoos on his hands and neck, wearing a black and gray checkered shirt and a black cap, sitting at a table in a room decorated with colorful artwork and posters on the walls.

Earl Funk | Co-Owner & Illustrative Specialist

He Started Before He Even Left High School

Earl Funk has been making art longer than most people have been thinking about tattoos. Before he co-founded The East, he was painting murals on bedroom walls and the sides of local businesses — the kind of kid who couldn't not make something. That hasn't changed. Since turning professional in 2002, Earl has spent over two decades building a body of work and a studio that reflect the same thing: an engine that genuinely never stops.

His influences are the New School legends — Jime Litwalk, Tony Ciavaro — and it shows in the bold line weights and saturated color that define his work. But Earl's style has always been his own. You know a piece is his before you're told.

Florida Weird, Large-Scale, and Custom to the Bone

Earl gravitates toward the strange and the specific. Florida imagery with a swampy, twisted edge. Creative mashups that shouldn't work but absolutely do. Full sleeves, leg pieces, and back projects where there's real room to tell a story — and real friendships that form over the sessions it takes to finish them. He also does high-impact single-session pieces for clients who want something sharp and immediate.

Everything is custom. Whether it starts from your concept or one of his own flash designs, every line is drawn with that specific client in mind. Earl is the one still at the drawing board when everyone else has called it a night.
